Colin James Hart was born on 27 February 1916, the son of Jane and Daniel Hart. He was educated at George Watson's College, Edinburgh, and then joined the staff of National Bank of Scotland, working at its Canonmills and West End branches, both in Edinburgh.

 

Outside work Hart was a territorial soldier, and at the outbreak of war in 1939 he was called up for full-time military service, initially in the Royal Scots and later in the Royal Army Pay Corps. After completing officer training he returned to the Royal Scots, with whom he was posted to Hong Kong in June 1941. He was wounded and captured at the fall of Hong Kong six months later. He survived the sinking of the Lisbon Maru on 2 October 1942, but fell ill with diphtheria and dysentery and died in Japan two weeks later, on 18 October 1942. Lieutenant Hart was 26 years old.
