Cyril Ernest Hayllar was born on 20 April 1921, the son of Ernest Henry Hayllar, a banker, and his wife Kate Isabel. On his 17th birthday in 1938 he joined the staff of his father’s bank, Westminster Bank, at its London head office. In the same month he also joined the Field Artillery section of the Territorial Army. His hobbies included swimming, photography and woodwork. 

 

As a territorial, Hayllar was mobilised for military service at the outbreak of war in September 1939. He received his commission in the Royal Artillery in 1940 and was sent to the Middle East in 1941 where he served with the Eighth Army at El Alamein. 

 

Lieutenant Hayllar was killed on active service in Tunisia on 11 May 1943, not long after his 22nd birthday.
