Dennis Richard Hockaday was born on 29 June 1921, the son of Ernest Richard Hockaday, an RAF officer, and his wife Alice Selina. He had three sisters, Muriel, Winifred and Marjorie. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank at its Plymouth branch in October 1939. 

 

In November 1940 Hockaday left the bank to join the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. 

 

Pilot Officer Hockaday was reported missing, presumed killed, on 13 March 1942 when the plane in which he was flying was lost without a trace over France. He was 20 years old. 

 

Dennis Hockaday is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Plymouth City Centre branch.
