Douglas Henshall was born on 24 June 1920, the son of Lily and Thomas Jackson Henshall. He was educated at New Mills County Secondary school and was a King's Scout. He joined the staff of District Bank as a junior at its Stockport branch in July 1937. He moved to Edgeley branch in 1938 and to Heaviley branch in August 1940. 

 

Just a month after joining his new branch, in September 1940, Henshall left the bank to go on military service, joining the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy. Leading Airman Henshall died on 6 May 1941 as the result of a flying accident whilst serving at HMS Goshawk, a Royal Naval air station in Trinidad and Tobago. He was 20 years old. The inscription on his gravestone reads 'Resting where no shadows fall; in peace he awaits us all. Mum, Dad, sisters & brother.'
