Edward Hill-Cottingham

Edward Francis Hill-Cottingham was born on 22 August 1921, the son of Edward and Elsie Hill-Cottingham. He was educated at Enfield Grammar School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer in February 1938 at Hertford branch. He moved to London Edgware branch in December 1939 and was promoted to clerk in July 1940.

 

In October 1941 Hill-Cottingham left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He trained in England and South Africa and was promoted to Flight Sergeant in October 1942. On 21 April 1944 Flight Sergeant Hill-Cottingham was killed in air operations over France. He was 23 years old. His obituary in the bank's staff magazine noted, 'He was a studious youth, possessing a good brain and through his death the bank has undoubtedly lost a very promising officer.'
