Frederick Roger Haines was born on 18 February 1923, the son of Frederick and Grace Haines. He joined the temporary wartime staff of Westminster Bank in May 1940, working at its Haslemere branch.

 

He later left the bank to join the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Sergeant Haines was killed on 29 November 1942 when his plane crashed during a night training exercise. He was 19 years old.
