George Dodgson Holme was born on 9 July 1907, the son of George and Agnes Holme. He joined the staff of District Bank as a junior at its Carnforth branch in October 1924. He was promoted to clerk at Kendal branch in 1928 and moved to St Annes on Sea branch in 1931. In 1938 Holme joined the Territorial Army.

 

In August 1939, just before the outbreak of the Second World War, Holme was called up for full-time military service with the Royal Artillery. By 1942 he held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and was on active service in Malaya. He was killed in action there on 7 January 1942. He was 34 years old and left a widow, Phyllis, and two children, six-year-old twins.
