George Edward Houghton was born on 1 July 1920, the son of George and Mabel Houghton. He was educated at Manchester Grammar School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at West Kirby branch in March 1937. He later moved to Hoylake branch and in July 1939 was promoted to clerk.

 

In September 1940 Houghton left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Naval Reserve. After training he was posted to the Middle East, sailing on Christmas Day 1940. After three years' service there, he was posted to a minesweeper, HMS Cato. Coder Houghton was among those lost when HMS Cato was sunk by a German human torpedo off the coast of Normandy on 6 July 1944. He was 24 years old.
