George Hoyle

George Vincent Hoyle was born in Huddersfield in 1917. In 1934 he went to work for Williams Deacon's Bank, and from February 1938 he was based at the bank's Swinton branch. 

 

Hoyle joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in about June 1939. He was called up to active service on 1 September 1939, becoming a pilot. He served in the Battle of Britain. 

 

Sergeant Hoyle was killed when his Hurricane was shot down over France on 21 May 1941. He was 23 years old.

 

George Hoyle is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Hardman Boulevard office, Manchester.
