Gordon Walter Harper was born on 23 August 1923, the son of Joseph and Ethel Alice Harper. He joined the temporary wartime staff of Westminster Bank in March 1941, working at its Oxford East branch. 

 

He later left the bank to go on war service, becoming a Sergeant in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was killed on 7 April 1945, when he was the wireless operator and air gunner of a Wellington bomber that crashed in the Netherlands after being struck by enemy anti-aircraft fire. He was 21 years old.
