Henri Halliday

Bank: Westminster Bank

Place of work: Head Office, London

Died: 18 July 1941

Henri Selwyn Halliday was born on 19 September 1918, the son of Algernon Selwyn Halliday and his wife Clemence Lois. He was educated at St Olave’s Grammar School and joined the staff of Westminster Bank’s head office on Lothbury, London straight from school in 1935. Outside work he was a keen sportsman, enjoying boxing, fishing and rowing. He was a member of the bank’s rowing club’s 1st Eight at Henley in 1939.

Halliday was also a territorial soldier, and was summoned for full-time military service in July 1939; the first member of staff from the bank's head office to be called up. He was commissioned in the spring of 1940, becoming a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery.

In May 1941 Halliday transferred to the RAF and was sent to Selwyn College, Cambridge, to undertake basic training. On 18 July 1941 he died by falling out of a window at the college, probably while sleepwalking. He was 22 years old and left a widow, Barbara, whom he had married in 1940.
