Mervyn Harold Harris was born on 16 April 1918, the son of William Harris, a banker, and his wife Edith. He had an older brother, Kenneth. Mervyn went to work for his father’s bank, Westminster Bank, in August 1935. In April 1939 he moved from West Ealing branch to Southall branch. 

 

In September 1940 Harris left the bank to join the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He trained as a pilot, and then spent some time as a flying instructor in England before being posted to Burma in 1945. Warrant Officer Harris was killed during air operations there on 19 June 1945. He was 27 years old. 

 

Mervyn Harris is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Southall branch.
