Norman Findlay Hillcoat was born in Renfrew in 1918, the son of Daniel George Hillcoat and his wife Jeanie. He worked for Commercial Bank of Scotland at its Glasgow Govan branch. 

 

During the Second World War Hillcoat left the bank to join the army, becoming a Corporal in the Seaforth Highlanders. He was killed in action in North Africa on 6 April 1943. He was 24 years old.
