Raymond de Lannoy Holden was born on 13 November 1908, the son of Percy and Arabella (nee Leather) Holden. He joined the staff of District Bank as a junior at its Manchester Oxford Road branch in May 1925. He was promoted to clerk at Sale branch in 1930. He moved to Fallowfield branch in 1932 and to the bank's Manchester head office in 1933. In the spring of 1935 he married Monica Alice. They had two sons, born in 1938 and 1941. 

 

In August 1941 Holden left the bank to go on military service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Flying Officer Holden died of pneumonia on 13 August 1943, while on board the troopship HMS Aorangi. He was buried at sea off the coast of West Africa. He was 34 years old and left a widow, Monica, and two young sons, aged 5 and 2.
