Charles Bryan Irving was born on 3 February 1922, the son of Norman and Jane Martin Macdonald Irving. He worked for National Provincial Bank.

 

During the Second World War Irving left the bank to go on war service, joining the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy. On 17 August 1940, whilst training at an RAF base in England, Leading Aircraftman Irving was killed in a flying accident. He was 18 years old. His elder brother Desmond, a Pilot Officer in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, was killed in action over Germany a year later.
