Douglas Arthur Innes was born on 28 March 1917, the son of William and Enid Margaret Watson Innes. He was educated at Berkhamsted School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at London St Mary Axe branch in July 1934. He moved to London Chancery Lane branch in April 1936 and was promoted to clerk the following October. He moved to London Cornhill branch in May 1937. He was the captain of the bank's first XV staff rugby team, and in 1939 he joined the London Scottish Regiment of the Territorial Army.

 

Innes was mobilised for military service at the outbreak of war in September 1939. He was commissioned in December, becoming a Second Lieutenant in the Gordon Highlanders. He was wounded and captured in continental Europe in spring 1940, and died of his wounds while imprisoned in Germany on 17 May 1940. He was 23 years old.
