Bernard Jones

Bank: National Provincial Bank

Place of work: Leamington Spa branch

Died: 27 November 1942

Bernard Watts Jones was born on 28 October 1917, the son of Beatrice and Benjamin Watts Jones. He was educated at Swansea Grammar School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Cardiff Docks branch in April 1935. He was promoted to clerk in July 1937 and moved to Leamington Spa branch in July 1937. He was a keen sportsman, enjoying rugby, football, golf and swimming, and he played water polo for Cardiff. His staff review notes remarked that he 'makes many friends and quickly becomes popular with customers...and shows a most gratifying and intelligent interest in his work far beyond that usually expected in an officer of his short experience.'

In June 1940 Jones left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. In April 1941 he was promoted to Sub-Lieutenant. Sub-Lieutenant Jones died on 27 November 1942 of wounds received when his ship, HM Trawler Leyland, was lost in a collision off Gibraltar. He was 25 years old and had been due to marry during his next home leave.
