David Horace Jones was born on 20 March 1916, the son of Captain John Thomas Jones, a master mariner, and his wife Catherine. He was educated at Aberayron County School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Lampeter branch in October 1934. He was promoted to clerk in January 1937 and moved to Cardigan branch a month later. His obituary in the staff magazine recalled that 'In sport he was an outstanding athlete and in the bank he was popular, keen and a reliable officer, with excellent prospects.' His younger sister also worked for National Provincial Bank.

In August 1940 Jones left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. In November 1941 he was taken prisoner and interned at Laghouat Camp in Algeria until freed by the Allies on their invasion of North Africa a year later. After recuperation he became a test pilot, and from D-Day onwards served on the Continent. Warrant Officer Jones was killed in action in France on 12 November 1944. He was 28 years old. The inscription on his gravestone reads 'He, beyond the reach of time, will always be my son.'
