Dewi Erfyl Jones was born on 8 November 1907, the son of Francis Griffith Jones and Annie Elizabeth Jones. He was educated at Newtown County Intermediate School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Leominster branch in November 1924. He was promoted to clerk in January 1927 and moved to Burton-on-Trent branch a month later. He moved to Manchester branch in November 1932, to Chester branch in June 1935, to Market Drayton branch in April 1939 and to Pudsey branch in February 1941. 

 

In July 1941 Jones left the bank to go on war service, joining the 10th Royal Hussars, Royal Armoured Corps. Trooper Jones was killed in action in the Middle East on 28 May 1942. He was 34 years old and left a widow, Elsie, whom he had married just nine months earlier.
