Frank Johnson was born on 22 June 1921, the son of Harry and Ethel Johnson. He joined the staff of District Bank as a junior at its Leeds branch in September 1937.

In February 1942 Johnson left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Flight Sergeant Johnson was killed in a flying accident in India on 23 December 1943. He was 22 years old.
