Frank Johnston was born on 27 July 1918, the son of Francis and Maud Johnston. He joined the staff of Manchester & Liverpool County Bank as a junior at its Leyland branch in August 1934. In 1935 County Bank was taken over by District Bank and Johnston became an employee of this bank. Outside work he was a member of the Territorial Army.

 

At the outbreak of war in September 1939 Johnston, as a member of the TA, was called up for full time military service. By 1944 he was a Captain in the East Lancashire Regiment, on active service in France. He was killed in action there on 18 July 1944. He was 27 years old.
