George Johnston

George Cran Johnston was born in Strathdon, Aberdeenshire in 1920, the son of Joseph and Isabella Johnston. He worked for Commercial Bank of Scotland at its Aberdeen West End branch.

 

Early in the Second World War Johnston left the bank to go on military service, serving in France and taking part in the evacuation of Dunkirk. In the summer of 1944 he was posted to East Asia, and by 1945 he held the rank of Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery. 

 

Lieutenant Johnston was killed in action in Burma on 4 June 1945. He was 25 years old and left a widow, Irene Mary, whom he had married in 1942, and a son.

Thank you for remembering my Dad’s elder brother. Sadly, their other and eldest brother, Joseph Johnston, (Gordon Highlanders) died 5 years earlier on 2nd June 1940 during the Dunkirk evacuation.

 

I am grateful for the further information about my uncle’s life and the photo that I had been unaware of until now.

 

This is a really admirable initiative.
