Samuel Leslie Jenkins was born in 1915, the son of Ellen and John Jenkins. He worked for National Provincial Bank at its Talgarth branch.

 

During the Second World War Jenkins left the bank to go on war service, joining the South Wales Borderers. From April 1940 he was attached to a commando unit of this regiment. He was seriously injured whilst fighting at Messina in August 1943, but recovered and continued to fight, and by 1944 he held the rank of Captain. On 6 March 1944 Captain Jenkins died of wounds after being captured while in command of a reconnaissance party in Italy. He was 29 years old and left a widow, Jean, and their baby daughter.
