Brian Chandos Kirby was born on 18 April 1921, the son of Rudolf Chandos Kirby and Muriel Kirby. Rudolf Kirby and his brother, Edward, both worked for District Bank, so when Brian Kirby joined District Bank as a junior at its Lytham branch in October 1937, he was following in the footsteps of his father and his uncle. 

 

In May 1941 Kirby left the bank to go on military service, joining the East Lancashire Regiment. On 13 June 1944, Second Lieutenant Kirby was killed in action in France. He was 23 years old and left a widow, Joyce, whom he had married less than six months earlier.
