Bryan Desmond Uprichard Kane was born on 8 February 1915 in Fiji, the son of Ethel Emma and Richard Cecil Rutledge Kane. He was educated at Sydney Church of England Grammar School, New South Wales, Australia. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at its Southampton Shirley Road branch in 1933. He was promoted to junior clerk 3 months later, and to clerk in 1936. He moved to Chelmsford branch in 1937. 

 

In September 1939 Kane left the bank to go on military service. He served in the Royal Horse Artillery, achieving the rank of Second Lieutenant. On 7 March 1942, Kane died from illness in hospital in Cairo. He was 27 years old and left a widow, Rita, whom he had married in 1939.
