Francis Stuart Kirk was born on 4 September 1916. He joined the staff of District Bank as a junior at its head office in Manchester in August 1935 and was promoted to clerk at Reading branch in July 1939.

 

In February 1940 Kirk left the bank to go on war service. By 1944 he was a Captain in the Royal Artillery, attached to the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) in Italy. He was killed in action there on 5 September 1944, the day after his 28th birthday.
