David Harold Lewis was born on 4 November 1901, the son of David and Caroline Lewis. He was educated at St John’s School, Leatherhead and Rossall School, Fleetwood. In November 1920 he went to work for National Provincial Bank, where his older brother John (make hyperlink to brother’s biography) had worked before being killed in action in France in 1917. David started as a temporary clerk at the bank’s Rugeley branch, and was promoted to clerk in December 1921. Over the next several years he worked at the bank’s branches in  Halifax, Chester, Tonbridge, and Southampton Avenue, in the last appointment serving as cashier/provisional manager from May 1937. In 1939 he became accountant at Portswood branch. He had a reputation among his colleagues as an efficient worker who was well-liked by all who knew him. 

 

Outside work Lewis had been a Territorial soldier and remained on the Territorial Reserve of Officers. At the outbreak of war in September 1939 he was called up for full time military service in the Royal Artillery. Captain Lewis was killed in a motorcycle accident on 8 May 1945. He was 43 years old and left a widow, May, and a teenage son.
