Douglas Alfred Hall Leece was born on 12 September 1918, the son of Harold and Hannah Leece. He was educated at Huddersfield College Secondary School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at its Huddersfield Westgate branch in August 1935. In October 1935 Leece moved to Huddersfield King Street branch and was soon promoted to junior clerk. He was promoted to clerk in 1938, and moved to Knaresborough branch in 1939.

 

At the outbreak of war in September 1939 Leece left the bank to go on military service in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. Lance Corporal Leece was reported missing on 21 November 1941, while serving in the Middle East. He was later found to have been captured, and died while a prisoner of war in Italy on 27 July 1942. He was 23 years old.
