Geoffrey George Lane was born on 10 June 1921, the son of Charles William and Dorothy Mary Lane. In 1938 he went to work for Westminster Bank at its Newington Butts branch, not far from his family's home in Thornton Heath. 

 

In October 1941 Lane left the bank to go on military service. He joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, completing his Sergeant's training in June 1943. He was posted to photographic reconnaissance duties, but was reported missing on his first operation, on 13 June 1943. He was later presumed to have died on that date. He was 22 years old. 

 

His obituary in the bank's staff magazine noted, 'he was a lad of sterling character and had a disposition which made him very popular with all his colleagues. He will be greatly missed.'
