Geoffrey Robert Leigh was born on 16 January 1923, the son of Robert and Lilian Leigh. He joined the staff of District Bank as a junior at its Manchester Regent Road branch in November 1939.

 

In September 1941 Leigh left the bank to go on military service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Flight Sergeant Leigh was killed in action on 4 December 1944, when his Spitfire was shot down over Italy. He was 21 years old.
