Gerald M Lanaway was born in Petworth, Sussex, on 3 October 1926, the son of Cecil and Violet Lanaway. In April 1942, when he was 15 years old, he joined the temporary wartime staff of Westminster Bank's Petworth branch. 

 

In November 1944, a few weeks after his 18th birthday, he left the bank to go on military service, rising to the rank of Captain in the Middlesex Regiment. He died in the Middle East on 2 October 1947 as the result of an accident, the day before his 21st birthday and not long before he was due for demobilisation.
