Gordon Lester was born on 9 April 1925 in Derbyshire, the son of James Harold and Dorothy Winifred Lester. He was educated at Bemrose School, Derby. 

 

In April 1941, just before his 16th birthday, Lester joined the temporary wartime staff of Westminster Bank at its Derby Iron Gate branch. In October 1943, after he had turned 18, he left the bank to go on military service, becoming a Sergeant in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was killed on a flight over Luxembourg after taking part in a raid on Wiesbaden on 3 February 1945. He was 19 years old.

Gordon Lester is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Derby St Peter's Street branch.
