Ian Lamb was born on 23 September 1920, the son of Harold and Clara Lamb. He was educated at Rivington & Blackford Grammar School and joined the staff of District Bank as a junior at its Manchester Piccadilly branch in July 1937. He moved to Manchester 55 King Street branch a month later and was promoted to clerk at Chorley branch in July 1938.

 

In January 1941 Lamb left the bank to go on military service, joining the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Sub-Lieutenant Lamb was killed in action on 11 January 1943, while serving at HMS St Angelo, a British fort and naval base on Malta. He was 22 years old and left a widow, Margaret, whom he had married in spring 1942.
