Paul James Lewis was born on 27 October 1919, the son of Sydney and Dorothea May Lewis. In October 1936, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for Westminster Bank, and in August 1938 was posted to its Weybridge branch. 

 

In May 1940 Lewis left the bank to go on war service, becoming a Sergeant Air Gunner in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was reported missing after air operations over enemy territory on 31 August 1941, and was later presumed to have died on that date. He was 21 years old.
