Alastair Stuart Mackie was born on 6 April 1921, the son of Alan Stuart Mackie and his wife Dorothy Louise Gourlay Mackie. In September 1938, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for the Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Edinburgh Haymarket branch. Not long afterwards he transferred to Edinburgh Blackford branch. 

 

In September 1939 Mackie left the bank to go on war service as a pilot in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Pilot Officer Mackie died in Malta on 27 January 1942, of injuries received when his plane was shot down by enemy fighters. He was 20 years old.
