Brough Maltby was born on 2 October 1910, the son of Brough Maltby and Isabel Armstrong Maltby. He was educated at Blundell's School, Tiverton. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Torquay branch in October 1928. He was promoted to junior clerk in January 1929, and to clerk in 1939. He moved to Launceston branch in 1932 and to Hastings branch in 1937. 

 

Outside work Maltby was a Territorial soldier, and in August 1939 shortly before the outbreak of war, he was called up for full time military service. By 1944 he was a Captain in the Royal Artillery, on active service in Burma. He was killed there on 24 May 1944. He was 33 years old and left a widow, Pauline.
