Dennis Madden

Bank: Glyn, Mills & Co

Place of work: London Holt & Co office

Died: 30 April 1943

Dennis Gerald Madden was born on 24 December 1910, the son of Gerald and Mabel Madden. He was educated at Wellington College, Berkshire. He joined the staff of Glyn, Mills & Co in March 1930 at its Holt & Co office.

In June 1940 Madden left the bank to go on war service becoming a Private in his father's regiment, the Irish Guards. He later received his commission and accompanied his regiment to North Africa. Lieutenant Madden was killed on 30 April 1943 by a shell while leading his men into a counter attack. He was 32 years old and left a widow, Rosalind, whom he had married in 1941.

His commanding officer wrote, 'He was Intelligence Officer and he could well have kept lying low at HQ, but no, he was here, there and everywhere rallying men, leading and encouraging when things looked very black. I want to say how deeply I sympathise with you in your great loss. Dennis had been with me permanently for the last month and I was extremely devoted to him. He really did magnificently out here and you can at least know that he laid down his life for his county in as fine and gallant a way as any man could and all to do with him should be very proud'.
