Derrick Victor Marchand was born on 16 December 1921, the son of Victor and Clarissa Marchand. He was educated at St Lawrence Preparatory School and St Dunstan's College. He joined the staff of Glyn, Mills & Co in January 1939 at its head office in Lombard Street, London. 

 

During the Second World War Marchand left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. The Hudson in which Flight Sergeant Marchand was flying was lost on 4 February 1943, with all five crew members missing, presumed dead. He was 21 years old.
