Duncan McTavish was born on 7 June 1918, the son of Duncan and Euphemia McTavish. In January 1935, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for the Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Glasgow Shawlands branch.

 

In September 1939 McTavish left the bank to go on military service, becoming a Flight Sergeant in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was killed in action on 2 September 1941. He was 23 years old. 

 

Duncan McTavish is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
