Ernest John Millard, known to his bank colleagues as Jack, was born on 12 October 1911, the son of Percival John and Mabel Dorothy Millard. He was educated at the Royal Liberty School, Romford. 

 

In July 1929 he joined the staff of Westminster Bank at its London City Road branch. After serving at several different branches he was posted to London Forest Gate branch in January 1939. Outside work he was interested in motoring and yachting. 

 

In June 1940 Millard left the bank to go on military service, joining the Royal Army Service Corps. In January 1941 he was posted to Singapore as part of headquarters staff. It was during the evacuation of headquarters from Singapore to Java that Sergeant Millard was killed, on 13 February 1942. He was 30 years old and left a widow, Sylvia, whom he had married in 1940.

 

Ernest Millard is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest London Stratford Broadway branch.
