Frank Mellish

Bank: Westminster Bank

Place of work: York branch

Died: 25 January 1943

Frank Vernon Mellish was born in Worksop on 7 August 1904, the son of Charles Mellish, a butcher, and his wife Margaret. He was educated at Worksop College.

In 1921 he went to work for London County Westminster & Parr's Bank (later known as Westminster Bank) at its Worksop branch. From 1939 he was based at the bank's York branch, until April 1942, when he left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Army Pay Corps.

He was taken ill in January 1943, and died in hospital in England on 25 January 1943. He was 38 years old and left a widow, Margaret, and two young children.

A colleague in the bank recalled, 'Frank Mellish was endowed with a great sense of humour and keen wit, and was the life and soul of any company he happened to be in, but he was also a very efficient officer of the bank...All who knew him have lost a true friend and comrade.'
