Gilbert Mansfield Murphy was born on 26 January 1921, the son of Frank and Elizabeth Murphy. In April 1937 he went to work for The National Bank as a probationer at its London Islington branch. The following year he was transferred to London Strand branch, where he was promoted to assistant.

 

In October 1940 he left the bank to go on military service in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Sergeant Murphy was killed in action on 26 June 1942. He was 21 years old.

 

Gilbert Murphy is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 250 Bishopsgate, London.
