Halliwell Sutcliffe Moss was born on 6 October 1918, the son of the Reverend John Moss and his wife Alice. He joined the staff of District Bank as a junior at its Preston branch in January 1937. He moved to Leyland branch later in 1937 and to St Annes on Sea branch in 1938. He joined the Territorial Army in 1939.

 

At the outbreak of war in September 1939 Moss, as a member of the TA, was called up for full time military service. By 1942 he was a Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery, on active service in Malaya. He was reported missing in action there in July 1942, but it was not until January 1944 that he was confirmed to have died as a prisoner of the Japanese on 16 July 1942. He was 23 years old.
