James Wilson Mallinson was born on 18 May 1919, the son of Dorothy and Herbert Crosby Mallinson. He was educated at Bradford Grammar School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Dewsbury branch in March 1936 and was promoted to junior clerk in June of the same year. He moved to Cleckheaton branch in 1938 and was shortly promoted to clerk. Mallinson came from a family of bankers; two of his uncles also worked for National Provincial Bank, and another worked for Coutts & Co, which was owned by National Provincial.

 

In September 1939 Mallinson left the bank to go on military service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. By 1940 he held the rank of Sergeant. Mallinson was killed on 4 July 1940, when his plane crashed during his first solo night training flight, near Wollerton in England. He was 21 years old.
