John Henry Mastin was born on 3 August 1923, the only son of Douglas and Violet Mastin. He joined Westminster Bank as part of its temporary wartime staff, working at Hastings branch, in August 1940. 

 

He later left the bank to join the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, and by May 1943 was a Sergeant Air Bomber. He was killed on 28 May 1943 when his Halifax bomber crashed in Germany. He was 19 years old.
