John Russell Morgan was born on 20 November 1907, the son of Gwilym Lewis Morgan and Sydna Williams Morgan. He was educated at Royal Masonic School, Bushey. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank Ltd as a probationer at its Pontypridd branch in January 1924. He was promoted to junior clerk in July 1924, and to clerk in 1927. He moved to Tonypandy branch in 1927, then to Builish Wells, Merthyr Tydfil, Bargoed, and finally to Manchester in 1939, where his colleagues say he made many friends.

 

In September 1941, Morgan left the bank to go on military service, joining the Royal Artillery. On 29 January 1944, Lieutenant Morgan died in the Middle East from injuries received whilst on active service. He was 36 years old, and left a widow, Mona, and a young daughter.
