Joseph Paul Raymond Mason was born on 6 December 1919, the son of Robert Carl and Ethelle Mason. He was educated at Hinckley Grammar School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Derby branch in January 1935. He was promoted to junior clerk 1936, and to clerk in 1937. He moved to Gloucester branch in July 1937. 

 

In February 1940 Mason left the bank to go on military service, serving in the Reconnaissance Corps. Lieutenant Mason was killed in a motorcycle accident on 7 September 1943, while serving with the Home Forces. He was 25 years old and left a widow, Kitty, and their young son.
