Robert Gair MacDonald was born on 2 April 1899, the son of Christina Sarah and Alexander Gair MacDonald. By 1920 he was a member of staff at National Bank of Scotland's Edinburgh West End branch. He later transferred to head office on St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.

 

During the Second World War MacDonald left the bank to go on military service, becoming a Lance Corporal in the Royal Scots. He died while on army service on 30 March 1940, three days before his 41st birthday.

 

Robert MacDonald is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Gogarburn campus, Edinburgh
