Robert Lloyd MacKinnon was born on 2 December 1918, the son of Donald and Isabella Greenlees MacKinnon. In May 1939, when he was 18 years old, he went to work for the Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Campbeltown branch. 

 

In October 1939 MacKinnon left the bank to go on military service, and by 1945 he was a Captain in the Seaforth Highlanders, on active service in Germany. He was killed in action there on 12 February 1945. He was 26 years old.
