Edward William Neild was born on 29 November 1907, the son of Frances (known as Cissie) and James Edward Neild. His father, James, was a law clerk and died in 1910, when Edward Nield was 2 years old. Edward Neild was educated at Pannal Ash College, Harrogate. 

 

In 1926, after leaving school, Neild joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at its Mirfield branch. He was promoted to clerk in 1928 and moved to Doncaster branch in 1931. Five years later he moved to Retford branch and in the same year, 1936, married Eunice Mary. Neild joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in May 1942. 

 

Exactly a month after joining up, on 29 June 1942, Aircraftman (2nd class) Edward William Neild was killed on active service in the UK. He was 34 years old and left his widow, Eunice.
